Well, he says upfront that he thinks the benefits of breastfeeding have
been exaggerated. He talks about 'two' sides, and gives the impression
that he is somehow 'neutral'. He does not mention the risks of formula,
but states that some breastfeeding benefits, such as allergy, asthma and
obesity protection, are not upheld, In fact, he states some studies
suggest breastfeeding can cause more allergies. He specifically says
that there is evidence that breastfeeding for a 'long' time, and
exclusively breastfeeding, can increase allergies - then says it's not
that strong. WTF?
He states there are no benefits to formula feeding, but that if a mother
is happier formula feeding, it is better for the child to be formula fed
and have a happy mother. (Agreed with the interviewer). No mention of
any risks to the child in this scenario.
I certainly hope those of you have defended this man, and are giving him
access to speak to breastfeeding supporters, feel you are doing the
right thing. He apologises at every turn, including saying "Breast is
best if it is possible."
Frankly, is this is an advocate, I'd hate to see the opposition. He
creates an impression that anyone who is strongly advocating for
breastfeeding, is a zealot who is not sending out scientific data but
their own agenda. Of course there are benefits, but let's not get off
the fence and say it's a big deal. And he does not mention for one
second, any concept that formula is not benign.
