Hello Wise Ladies,
I invite your opinions and clarification with regards to our local infant feeding
class and the Code.
Up until recently, we taught a "Breastfeeding Class" as part of our prenatal
series, with no reference to feeding ABM. Last year, after hearing Mary
Renfrew speak, and make the excellent point that ABM feeders constitute a
high risk group. She pointed out, rightly, that there is no evidence base for
recommendations on how best to reduce risk in reconstitution of ABM, cleaning
of equipment, etc. . .
In our area we have provincial healthfiles that address ABM feeding, albeit with
little evidence base. That said, our provincial recommendation is not to feed
powdered ABM if child is less than 1 month, sick, premature, for example.
However, for a few years now, we have had no mention of ABM feeding in our
free, universally shared prenatal booklet given out to all new parents. Thus,
few parents are aware of our ABM feeding recommendations, given that this
information is not shared universally disseminated.
So recently we made a change back from Breastfeeding class to infant feeding
class. The class remains 98% about breastfeeding. The difference is that we
mention some of the main provincial recommendations around reconstitution
and cleaning of equipment (do not demonstrate). We offer the healthfiles
relating to formula feeding as part of the class. And we invite further, more
specific questions about ABM after the class.
Does this breech Code?
How do others address safer feeding practices given that many families give
ABM?
Warmly,
