I am seeking info from you wise ones again,
I have permission to post this unusual situation, as I have not seen this myself
and cannot find anything in the archives. 35 week infant born two days ago
with what mom described as a dark bloody stool shortly after delivery. She
denies any placental abruption. Babe was in SCN for obs and continued to
pass stool with bright red blood. He began nursing after the bloody stools
were noted and did well. Her Peds stopped BF, put babe on Nutramigen, and
instructed mom to eliminate dairy from her diet. KUB was normal, no fissures
noted. Stools are becoming less bloody now, but blood is still red when
present so we know it is not maternal. I have never heard of a babe having
bloody stool from dairy use in mom prior to breastfeeding. My gut feeling is
that there is a fissure high enough to not be visible on external visual exam,
since babe is acting well and abdominal assessment and KUB are WNL. We
have instructed mom to freeze all pumped milk until we confirm/rule out cause
of bleeding. Has anyone out there experienced anything like this before? Am I
wrong to think bloody stool prior to breastfeeding is not due to mom's diet?
We are hopeful peds will allow babe back to breast soon (we aren't going to
inform her how long it takes to get all the cow milk protein out of mom's milk,
since we don't think it is likely the cause of the trouble.) Please if anyone has
advice to share, I would be very grateful. I want to get this guy back to
breast ASAP!
Thanks in advance, Jan in Indiana where Spring has finally sprung!
