Many of you work in US hospitals that received the CDC assessment of
Maternity Practices in Infant Nutrition and Care (mPINC survey) in the summer
of 2007. 82% of maternity hospitals or birthing centers in the US responded,
2,690 in all. Results of the survey were sent to all participating hospitals last
summer. The survey impacts all IBCLC in the US, whether they work in the
hospitals or not.
This is a very useful survey because it allowed hospitals to see the areas that
they were doing well in to support breastfeeding mothers, as well as
indications from this benchmark report of opportunities for quality
improvement.
Now the CDC would like feedback on this survey, and its usefulness as a tool
for improvement. If you would like to learn more about the original survey you
can see the information about the survey at www.cdc.gov/mpinc. The would
like feedback before April 1st. You can read about this at
http://edocket.access.gpo.gov/2009/pdf/E9-2260.pdf. Comments may be sent

I know our hospital has been very interested in the report we received. We
now know how we stand as compared to the national score, the state score,
and as compared to hospitals of comparable size. We are able to use this
information to improve our breastfeeding services.
If you would like to encourage the CDC to repeat this survey in the future,
please write to them and let them know.
