I do agree that ultimately it is mother's choice. I do agree that some
people make poor health choices (breastfeeding or otherwise) even when
presented with factual info not tainted by commercial influence. Sometimes
these choices are influenced by culture or other societal constraints.
However......I do strongly believe that stronger statements and
recommendations from health care providers and organizations will influence
more women to initiate breastfeeding, exclusively breastfeed, and continue
for longer. As an example I would refer you to Rush Mother's Milk Club and
the high initiation rate in the Nicu there. And a local hospital near where
I live where the Nicu staff ask mothers to provide ebm, regardless of what
their original feeding intention was, and most moms do it.
