Just looked for this online to confirm the title and date of publication. Back in
2005, American actress (television only, I think) Jenny McCarthy wrote a book
titled, Belly Laughs: The Naked Truth About Pregnancy". Seems I flipped
through it at a book store, found it painful to read. It was a rant that
included crass content including one vulgar chapter title after another that I
won't share here. I was curious about the breastfeeding content and found it
to be especially painful to read, and if my recall is correct, there was her
description of breast implants and engorgement, not planning to bf - - I think.
She may have done fairly well with the sales of the book (rated as crass but
hilarious by a number of reviewers). She has subsequently written two other
books about raising a child with autism/healing autism.
I think her brand of humor in her first book resonated with many others of her
generation. I have a sense of humor but found that particular book a painful
read.
Maybe other mothers who have had their rants on motherhood
topics/breastfeeding difficulties published were inspired by McCarthy's ranting
extraordinaire. We can re-introduce the art of gentle discourse/nurturing
language in support of the challenges that many new families face so early,
with a gentle sense of humor woven throughout. I find so much of the media
today a harsh experience and avoid much of it, but I imagine McCarthy's
subsequent books on healing autism are written in more gentle language.
