Thank you to all those who responded. Mother says that she will be seeing the
Paediatric surgeon next week, which is 2 weeks prior to the final surgery. She
will email him the documents showing use of breastmilk prior to surgery to see
if she can get the fasting time reduced. She will ask about making the surgery
time earlier in the day. Will ask about admission in advance, use of IV
hydration and maybe some sedation. Coinicidentally the last surgery was also
1100am but the baby had to fast for 6 hrs then and was extremely distressed
in that time frame. She will continue with exclusive breastfeeding rather than
try to introduce water, as friends and GP suggested. The surgeon, who is well
respected and who is pro breastfeeding may have just had a bad
communications day, is what mother now thinks. He is the only one to come
up into our regional area and is happy to do tongue tie procedures as needed.
Mother may also have tuned out because she has been so stressed about her
non-perfect baby and the horrid bag that she has had to deal with. She will
really work on this enormous fasting time; she says that the surgeon said that
he wanted to make sure that the bowel was pristine before closing the stoma
and getting the new bowel-anus going, in order the give the baby the best
chance of success. I will keep you posted re progress. Thanks again.
