Terri,
I just posted this in answer to the question on Versed, but the same applies
to your question. The best resource I have found for dealing with physicians
who are not inclined to give credence to MMM is the Academy of
Breastfeeding Medicine protocols. They can be found on their web site.
www.bfmed.org
I have attached the specific paper dealing with analgesia and anesthetics to
this post. Note that you have to read into a couple of pages to get to the
part that addresses surgery in breastfeeding mothers rather than intrapartum
and immediately postpartum mothers.
The paper is thoroughly referenced. The Academy's membership is restricted
to physicians. Those two facts, plus the fact that the ABM web site, journal,
and protocols are all very scientific and have little in the way of "touchy-
feely" language that turns most physicians off should be of great benefit in
persuading reluctant physicians who are looking to shield themselves from
liability.
It may also interest you to note, and perhaps to later point out to those
reluctant physicians, that Dr. Hale was a key contributor to the protocol. His
research has obviously been invaluable and physicians who are deeply
committed to breastfeeding recognize that.
I hope this helps!
Heather
