In fact this is how it is dealt with in the paper
eg " The OR for maternal neglect increased as the duration of breastfeeding
decreased (adjusted ORs of 1.0, 2.3, and 3.8 with breastfeeding for >4
months, for 4 months, and not at all, respectively") and "We clearly
demonstrated that lack of breastfeeding increased substantially the odds of
maternal (but not nonmaternal) maltreatment, specifically child neglect.
After adjustment for multiple confounders, there was a nearly fourfold
increase in the odds of maternal neglect for nonbreastfed children, compared
with children who were breastfed for >4 months. We clearly demonstrated that
lack of breastfeeding increased substantially the odds of maternal (but not
nonmaternal) maltreatment, specifically child neglect. After adjustment for
multiple confounders, there was a nearly fourfold increase in the odds of
maternal neglect for nonbreastfed children, compared with children who were
breastfed for .4 months."
Very nice paper and should be used to leverage breastfeeding support into
programs supporting vulnerable families.
