Dear Friends:

Each mother has her own preferrred way of accepting help; some like the
telephone, others prefer the internet and some want a face to face
encounter.

Whatever her preferred method, my prayer is that she is engaged in a
relationship with a live human being that cares and has knowledge to give
accurate and practical advice and encouragement.

The mother I am truly worried about is the one that is all by herself,
wading through the swamp of the Internet and trying to figure out by
herself, what is going on. I will always remember the mother (because I
published her case in MIDIRS Midwifery Digest a few years ago!) who
diagnosed herselt with a condition based on solitary Internet research, and
treated herself for that condition and developed an enormous oversupply as a
result. The oversupply turned into another new set of problems by the time
she came to see me. It took quite a while for her to find her balance.

My plea is for relationship. After all, breastfeeding is a relationship.
Don't we talk to some close friend when living with our lover proves
challenging? No different to living with a new baby and having breastfeeding
challenges.

warmly,
