Hi Lara,
I can understand your point of view! :o)
When we were visiting my sil and her family in Cambodia, we took water
bottles with us when going out.
I don't know if you know what the climate is like in the Netherlands, most
of the time...?
Believe me... sipping water from a bottle every couple of minutes is *not*
something that is necessary to keep you from being dehydrated.
In our country, I think it is often simply a different kind of addictive
behaviour, although of course I prefer people sipping water from a bottle to
nicotine from a cigarette! hahaha
Apparently, constantly playing with a string of hair is another kind of
'compulsive' behaviour, due to insecure attachment. Okay, admitted...
guilty! :-o
Then again... still better than being an alcohol or nicotine addict with a
depressed character, like my mom, sad enough... :-(
I only think it is important (and interesting, for that matter!) to be aware
of these kinds of behaviour, if we want to study the origins of problems.
Just as compulsive repetitive movements are a sign of underlying problems,
so may other things/gestures/habits point us in certain directions.
All of that can help to address the underlying problem, which would be
preferable to symptom fighting.
What the worrisome behaviours are, will indeed differ from country to
country, from culture to culture and from climate to climate.
That is partly why Lactnet is such a valuable resource! ;o)
Okay, enough... before the listmothers will remind us to stay on topic...
;-))
Bye,
Marianne Vanderveen IBCLC, Netherlands (and, like the GOLD09-staff,
satisfied with this morning's recording for 'Capturing Breastfeeding Culture
Worldwide')
