Hang on a minute, Gonneke and Morgan, dear friends!

Please note that the LLLI policy does explicitly state that the Leader
gives information to the mother, about all the options open to her,
and enables the mother to make her own fully informed decision. The
policy rules out the Leader making a particular recommendation to the
mother. When does LLLI make a recommendation? Think for a moment
ladies. It is a very very rare case when a Leader would make a
recommendation to a mother - I can think of one occasion in 28 years
as a Leader when I have recommended something (that the mother see her
doctor as soon as possible - in this case, and I was glad that I had
noted that in my log, later.) The role of the Leader is always to
provide information and support so that the mother can make her own
informed decision.

When I work as an IBCLC I am sometimes more directive - I might
suggest that a non-thriving baby needs food soon and most likely give
the mother information about hand expressing or pumping her milk. More
like a recommendation in that case!

We have discussed the LLLI policy fairly recently on Lactnet, I know I
have pasted the whole policy into an email message within the last few
months. If you need to check it, should be easy to find. Let me know
if you need a copy.

Happy New Year all!
Rachel
