You're right, it's not clear, although this "When a mother kisses her baby, she 'samples' those pathogens that are on the baby's face - the very ones that the baby is about to ingest" to me means wherever on the baby's face mom kisses the baby. Probably true of hands, too.

Probably a cultural thing, but to some people 'kissing' only means
mouth-to-mouth contact. I don't think it's clear from what's been
posted here which definition of kissing was used in the research on
health benefits.
