This is appalling, and I certainly hope it's not "just the way it
goes"! I would be angry if I had been treated this way. I might
have been tempted to ask if the housekeeper and nanny were also
providing their services at a discounted rate.
The midwives I used for two of my births explained their discount
policy this way: If you drive a nicer car than either of us, then we
won't be inclined to give you a special rate. (Both drove
respectable newer cars but nothing fancy.) That seemed fair enough
to me.
