Hi Jacquie,

I would suggest getting a copy of Ellyn Satter's book, "Child of Mine", because
she has a great theory on child feeding and growth. Basically if you try
to "force" him to eat more to gain weight, it will backfire and have the
opposite effect, but if you let him eat and grow at his own rate, he will grow
where he needs to.

I agree with Linda about getting a second opinion too. When I went for my
daughters 3 year physical, her weight had fallen below the 5th %. I pointed it
out to my doctor, who said "well, she's been camping out there her whole life,
I'm not concerned, are you?" It was a great response! And, she knew my
daughter was a breastfed baby/toddler. Point is, kids grow at their own rate,
and as long as he is healthy, developmentally on target, and has lots of
energy, I don't see a cause for concern. Also, think about the long term
health consequences of under-weight? There really are none.

Good luck with this situation. It certainly can be difficult when a doctor is
pushing you in one particular direction. But, as many have already said-
follow your instincts!!
