Dear all:
Here's what I cannot figure out between the WHO recommendations and the
squeamishness of certain health care practitioners in terms of human milk.
1) The WHO and UNICEF recommend human milk from a healthy wet nurse or human
milk bank as the 2nd option after expressed milk from the infant's own mother.
2) The WHO and UNICEF recommend that health care practitioners must educate parents
about the risks of feeding methods other than breastfeeding and teach them to minimize
the risks of the methods they choose.
So, doesn't "Withholding information" which is but a small step away from censorship
violate those two recommendations?
Furthermore, how does this particular recommendation square with recommendations on
fertility treatments which may involve sperm donors, egg donors, surrogacy, etc. If we
applied the same principals none of the fertility clinics that advertise heavily in Manhattan
would be able to do so and ONLY if a mother asks about it would she be told about
particular procedures (assuming she knows what all of these are).
Finally, since formula is LOWER on the list, we should be putting every effort into
assisting parents to safely use the 2nd best option. As far as I'm concerned, the
WHO/UNICEF document is promoting something that is of a higher ethical standard.
Best, Susan Burger
