Dear Rachel, and all,

Thank you for your answer, I thought of contacting you directly and you
answered earlier; (Congratulations for your price!
I looked at the video!)

Well the fact is that: in France, the situation is already bad, with moms
having very sore nipples, damaged nipples, and the caregivers take care of
them when there is the lesion; but not at a previous stage like: do you have
any pinched nipple? because very few caregivers know there are red flags
before the lesion appears.... and as french moms believe that sore nipples
ARE the normal way of breastfeeding... and as less french moms are aware of
the red flags......

The care of the wound also, is not really well known; now we have purelan of
medela, and lansinoh, those two creams are sold anywhere but still without
any good background; and since one year we have hydrogel dressings which are
also counceled.

But if the cause is not ruled out, the wound stays still and gets worse...

I swore you to share a bottle of good Champagne the day we have good rates
of BF, I should precize: good rates of succeeding in the project of
breastfeeding :-)

So when I have been contacted by this woman, presenting me those impet
shells for sore nipples, telling me she has been presenting this product for
six months to midwifes, I wished to have elements about it; I would not like
to get the information the situation worsens with them... :-)

And if some are interested by the situation in France, no worry I could
write hundreds of pages :-)
Breast regards,
et FELICITATIONS RACHEL!

Subject: impet shells for sore nipples

This is an old folk remedy from Norway, the shells look like the
stereotypical straw hats you see in old pictures of people working in rice
paddies, and are called 'elbow shells' in Norway. There is no scientific
evidence for their effect. I am of the opinion that if it feels good it's
probably harmless and if it doesn't feel good, why use it? If it is being
sold to women (they used to just pick them up off the shore, for free) then
whoever is selling it should be able to show that it is worth the money and
is not harmful. Whichever authorities may apply to such sales, should
insist that such evidence is provided.
That said, we have a drawer full of them on my ward, gathered by staff on
holiday at the seashore, and a lot of women like them, esp if their skin is
so abraded that anything touching their nipples is painful. I'm happy to
report that the staff in my unit are more likely to do real trouble shooting
now than they were just a few years ago, before resorting to the use of
gadgets, magic feathers, salves, etc. for soreness. Now if I could just get
eradicate the notion that it is normal to be very sore for the first two
weeks, I could retire happily.

Very cute that a Dane is claiming this as a Danish remedy; I believe it has
been in use in Norway for over 100 years...
