I'm coming out of lurkdom just to chime in on this one - I had a mum
with a FTT baby ring me the other day. Her health nurse wanted her
to start ABM. They were thinking mum had a supply problem. After
checking through this carefully, there was no way there was a supply
problem. Mum had plenty - something else was going on. I asked
about allergic profiles of the rest of the family - sure enough - dad
was very allergic to dairy products. I urged her to think about
eliminating dairy products from her diet and to consider seeing a
dietitian who would support BF and an elimination diet. She saw a BF
friendly doctor in town and was supported to keep feeding - and this
doc also thought it would be worth her while trying to eliminate
dairy products as a start. If the baby had not gained in the interim
- I think there would have been a lot of invasive tests going on...
Well surprise - a few weeks later, baby is MUCH more settled and
content and he has GROWN! Imagine if they had put him on ABM.......
Jennifer - I would love to *talk* with you further about good things
to read up on about diet - both in mum and baby in these sorts of
cases and the kinds of gentle things one can do to heal mum's gut.
A very relieved,
