«I recently read a Consumer Report article about when to buy organic and
when it's ok not to. That article said that fruits that have a skin like
pineapple, oranges, bananas one would be fine not to buy organic b/c the
pesticides are in the peel which we don't eat and the the skin or peel
protects the fruit from absorbing pesticides.»
It is true that fruits and veggies with thicker skin tend to have *fewer*
pesticides in/on them (once peeled) than say a strawberry or raspberry where
you can' t easily wash them the same way. However, it is not true that
*all* pesticides are in the peel. There are pesticides that are called
"systemic" pesticides that you can apply on, for example, just a few leaves
of the plant and yet the plant takes the pesticide in question up into its
system (kind of like our blood stream ;-)) and circulates it everywhere in
the plant, including into the fruit when it is at its fruit-bearing stage.
This is so that an insect or fungus or whatever is attacking the plant will
get a dose of the pesticide no matter what part of the plant they
eat...might even be the roots. So many fruits with peels *still* have some
pesticides in them, even once the peel is removed. But the "topical"
(non-systemic) pesticides that only work when they stay on the part of the
plant the predator likes will not be *inside* the fruit under the peel
usually.
