And it was fantastic! I got a really, truly, breastfeeding mother! Out of
the 30-40 babies born during my rotation, there were only 4 breastfeeding
babies, including one who had never gone to breast. Today, I got a mother
who was really breastfeeding!
She was a lovely young woman. We talked about how to know her baby was
getting enough to eat, we talked about how she could lay down to nurse, what
to do if she should have problems with engorgement. Her baby was incredibly
accommodating, latching on well so mom could see the sliver of her tongue at
the corner of her mouth, dad could pull back on the breast just a bit to see
the tongue cupping. Baby got "too far" up on the breast, and mom was able to
adjust her position by moving her belly-to-belly and slightly moving her
closer to midline. Baby was kind enough to swallow so mom and dad could hear
that sweet swallow sound, she wiggled her ear so mom and dad could see where
the jaw muscles were attached. And, mom took the number for the local
breastfeeding support group.
It was such a relief to have such a positive experience to end my rotation.
Best wishes,
Sam Doak
We're going to Candy Mountain, Charlie!
