I only have to ask. Has the Nestle Boycott done any good in the last 20 years
or so? Companies have become so large, that a boycott from even a seemingly
large cadre of people, who all seem to feel one way, has virtually NO impact
on those companies at all. I don't see Nestle being the least bit bothered or
harmed by the boycott. (Ah, we knew she was a heretic!) I see Nestle
Formula selling like crazy, I see people lining up in DROVES at WalMart, I see
cars lined up at my local BP gas station (all these companies have someone
calling for Boycotts against them.) I see a boycott as outdated and not likely
to achieve what we wish it would. We can wish, but the Day for this is long
past, IMO.
My kids have only eaten a Crunch Bar if they get on in their Halloween candy.
(I used to throw them away, until they could read, and take a chocolate
count.) I still can't force myself to buy their stuff. But, in the long run, I see
little or no damage to large companies from recent boycotts. 30 years ago,
yes, today, with our Global Economy, and readily government accepted
Monopolies in everything from Oil, to Candy to Breastpumps, No. Sadly.
I think we need to think pragmatically. Just as these companies are huge, their
government support is huger (is that a word? I'm losing my mind here.) Other
steps, in this dreadful political and economic atmosphere need to be taken,
but saying "We'll show you, we won't buy your products." only leads the
companies to say, "Yeah, but everyone else will." And, they are right. Babies R
Us has more customers in a single day than any of us see in a year.
Other, more modern steps need to be taken. I believe the age of the Boycott
actually having ANY power over even midrange companies, much less large
ones, is over, my friends. Sad, but true. Other steps.
I hope I have not alienated anyone with my rather heretical view of the well
loved Boycott. I meant no harm, I just want to spend my energy on work that
will actually GET results. Forgive me if we politely differ on this opinion, it
doesn't mean I don't support other ideas, but just not this one.
