Hello Angela,

I think in general we all agree on the fact that sometimes, there may be a
need for the use of something else than the mother's own milk. Preferably,
that would be donor milk (or even milk from the breastfeeding next door
neighbour, which is not by far as 'strange' to the baby as cow's milk) and
if not available ABM.
I think what you call bashing, is the disapproval of the societal acceptance
of willingly and knowingly chosing to bottle feed ABM, where breastfeeding
was in itself not an impossibility at all.
Sounds 'nice', to say that an outsider should not make it their business
what the mother's personal situation is. Isn't that part of the problem,
though: the lack of social involvement? That can and often will be explained
as interference, but I have stated this before: under the disguise of not
'chosing to interfere' often lies an unwillingness 'to get close to someone
and care'. Not interfering is not only polite: sometimes it is also the easy
way out, because it prevents us from becoming responsible or involved. It is
not an easy to solve problem, but if there were more talk on the issue and
people in general would be better informed and less bombarded with
misleading commercial information, ABM-use could be greatly reduced. Babies
don't *need* as much ABM as there is sold in the world, not by far!

Warmly,

Marianne Vanderveen, Netherlands

Subject: [LACTNET] ABM mother bashing

I am sorry to convey a complaint here but bashing mothers that make a
choice to use ABM is just not fair or appropriate. An outsider has NO
IDEA what her situation is nor should they make it their business what
her personal situation is. I could go on and on with reasons that an
almost exclusively breastfeeding mother and baby could have been in the
situation of feeding the baby ABM while holding her near her breast.
I have no information deficit as to why mother's milk is a better choice
than ABM and the hazards of ABM. What I have chosen and how I feel
about ABM and mother's milk does not and should not be a factor in how I
help mothers and babies. I think the ABM mother bashing is a problem
for the field of lactation. I don't believe any type of bashing is
appropriate for lactnet.
