I can only give you my own experience. I was given the same line about
readability. In my experience it is not the readability that is at issue, it is
that most radiologists have never seen a lactating breast so aren't sure what
they are looking at.
I contacted our state(Wisconsin) school of radiology and had them do a
computer consult with the local radiologist. The local radiologist was none too
happy with this 'pushy and far too opinionated lactnazi' (he didn't know I had
friends who work there) interfering with his radiology department, but when
I reminded him that I pay his bill and I would happily go to the radiology
department at another facility he was suddenly much more amenable.
The radiology school was only too happy to look at and read my MRI. This was
the first time most of these students and a number of the professors had
gotten to see a lactating breast. I figure I am starting a trend and changing
radiology's future.
The best part of this was that we now have the views of my breasts while
they were lactating and while they are not. I have some 'physical anomalies' in
my breasts that would normally have been considered signs of cancer but
because they haven't changed in my nonlactating breast from my lactating breast it
is considered just part of my anatomy. If we hadn't seen these 'anomalies'
while I was lactating the cancer panic button would have been pressed. Instead
we just watch and see.
Tell this Mom to stick to her guns about continuing to breastfeed and make
the powers that be figure out how to make it happen. It helps if you can find a
BF-friendly breast specialist. Mine was/is my best supporter and greatest
advocate. He even got me a button that says 'lactnazi and proud of it!'

Hello, all ~ just saw a mom who is planning to wean at 6 months so she can
have an MRI breast scan. She has been told that she must wean because it's
difficult to read the scan of a lactating breast. (Putting off the scan
isn't really an option.)
Does anyone know of any research / experience lactating through MRI? The
only information I've seen so far says nothing about the impact of lactation
on the accuracy / 'readability' of MRIs.
Thanks!
Ingrid
