Grr. I just did an interview with a reporter from Canada's national
newspaper, the Globe and Mail, about breastfeeding in public (there is a
nurse-in planned for today at a clothing store where a nursing mom was told
to move to a fitting room). I commented to the reporter that perhaps instead
of trying to banish breastfeeding mothers we should be thanking them for
benefitting the entire community. She said "huh? What do you mean?" I said
that since breastfeeding protects babies from various illnesses, and
formula-fed babies have higher rates of many illnesses and are more likely
to be hospitalized, breastfeeding saves us all tax dollars. She seemed so
surprised. She said "Is this documented? There's research to show breastfed
babies are healthier?" Uh, yeah. I explained just a little - tip of the
iceberg - and she says "Wow, that's an excellent point. That's amazing."
How do people not know this? How do you get to be an adult woman, reporter
for a national newspaper, and not know that formula feeding increases the
health risks to babies??
Ah well, one more person knows now.
