A kind pharmacist researched some stuff for me. I'm passing it on to you all.
from International breastfeeding journal:
I won't quote the whole article and how they broke down the study, you can
look up what ever you want but in a nutshell her is some interesting info:
Women were in 2 groups one group used only EBM on nipples the other used
peppermint WATER.
Women who were randomized to receive peppermint water were less likely to
experience nipple and areola cracks (95) compared to women using EBM
(27%). Conclusion: This study suggests that peppermint water is effective in
the pervention of nipple pain and damage. Futher studies are needed to
assess the usefulness of peppermint water in conjunction with correct
breastfeeding techniques.
sidenote here.. I have also heard that peppermint water has been a long
standing herbal remedy for belly aches in infants. Were talking a DROP or
two. Those of you who have read this article any thoughts.
Have any of you used the peppermint water on moms with cracked nipples?
curious,
robin I like to offer moms something other than lanolin (which is stocked in
our med drawers)
