Arthrogryposis a descriptive term for limited joint mobility. There are many different causes. This may start very early in the pregnancy. The function and structure of the joints develops as the fetus moves. This condition is not progressive.

I have worked with infants who have had limited movement because the uterus was too small because of multiple gestation or because there was limited amniotic fluid. Physical therapy was very helpful for many of these infants.

Some of the other infants had neurological problems and the arthrogryposis was one of their symptoms. One common feature that the babies shared was excessive amniotic fluid that may be related to not swallowing while inutero. Some of these babies have had a very short life span. I found an article that was was informative on the web www.emedicine.com/ped/topic142.htm

Please let us know who this goes. Sincerely, Rachel Wahl
