Dear all:
My curious mind cannot keep me from trying to figure this out --- but I've made some
inquiries to others to try to find out the answer to the question of which kills more infants --
- guns or bottles. As of now, infant mortality rates do not list guns among the top ten
causes of mortality. The most recent study that I know of ranking child survival
interventions, listed breastfeeding at the top of the pile. The number of deaths worldwide
that I have often seen quoted at conferences is 1 million deaths a year attributable to not
breastfeeding. Let me repeat ONE MILLION DEATHS PER YEAR. Now one could argue
endlessly about whether it was due to the bottle or the contents of the bottle, or the method
of feeding --- but at this point in time in the developing areas of the world --- bottles are
mostly filled with some form of formula however improperly prepared.
Best, Susan
