Marianne,
I'm not sure if this would be helpful as far as references, but what about
contacting Jean Liedloff, author of The Continuum Concept? She has a site and
contact info at the bottom of her site; continuum-concept.org.
Morgan's suggestions of Karp's 5 S's and her other suggestions of Sears' and
Sunderlan's works could explain the science behind not letting babies cry
alone. As to what parents can actually do, I tell moms that even though it
seems fruitless, holding and comforting their crying baby lets the baby know
someone cares and is trying to help. I agree with you that prevention of crying
bouts by investigating what's causing the baby to cry for long periods (or
for that matter at all) is of utmost importance. The acceptance of infant
crying as "just a stage" is so wrong in my opinion. There are reasons babies
cry and helping parents to eliminate possible causes for crying,
allergy/reflux, gas accumulation from improper suck, oversupply or difficulty handling the
milk flow, sensory issues, and so on can give them hope and a sense of "doing
something." I've repeatedly heard from moms, "Oh, the baby is so much
better since I nursed on one side per feed, or I eliminated dairy, etc," and
knowing that they're actively doing something to find the cause of crying
eliminates that helpless feeling which leads to anger caused by feeling inadequate.
Perhaps you've shared this before, but what is this guideline to which you
refer?

<That is what my present question is about: I'm swamped with stuff to =
read and things to figure out, in order to be well prepared for the =
meeting in which we can comment on the guideline that is about to be =
implemented. One item in this discussion is: "Well, if you don't agree =
with letting baby cry and swaddling him, what do *you* suggest as a =
solution for parents who can't deal with their crying baby anylonger?"
I'm in favour of prevention, of course, like always, also when it comes =
to lactation problems. So, what I would like to know: who can get me on =
track of literature that shows that a (really) different parenting style =
will lead to a society that doesn't even know the concept of cry-babies>
