Because Nikki, unfortunately, all the staff who care for these moms have
access to getting the "stuff" for their breasts. I need an alternative to
lanolin. (Thank you to those who have e-mailed me off list with plant based
products.) I have no power over what others choose to do to the new moms.
Yes, you bet, we do inservices at staff meetings, but not every nurse
attends. I can only support her when I am there in the few hours they give
me to do what I can in educating, empowering, and fighting for their right to
give babies what I believe to be a basic human right.... the right to
have.......breastmilk. And some moms get so beat up from a poor latch right
from the start, they believe in their minds that a salve or gadgets or such will
have a magic affect on her breasts. These moms like gadgets. Why do you
suppose they love those formula bags? I can't change that in the hour or so I
have with them. Even after I correct /help/show/teach position & latch and
hear "oh it doesn't hurt anymore". " My nipples no longer look like lipstick." I
was told to do 15/15 on each side and ON and on it goes. I do my best by
my moms, and if I were king i would most certainly change the way hospitals
prioritize!
best,
robin
