Angela, if you have read a "lot" of their material, you know that this same
woman also advocates HITTING BABIES as young as FOUR MONTHS with either
a tree "switch" (using a "tree branch" for older children) and also using a thin
(and very painful) length of Plumbing Tubing. For nothing more than "being
willful" by "refusing to go to sleep when the parents say it is time to"
from "refusing to eat what is offered to them" to break them of the "habit"
of "crying when Mother leaves the room." How loving.
Here is a quote from these "loving" parents, the Pearls.
Writes Pearl. “For the under one year old, a little, ten to twelve-inch long,
willowy branch (stripped of any knots that might break the skin) about one-
eighth inch diameter is sufficient. Sometimes alternatives have to be sought. A
one-foot ruler, or its equivalent in a paddle, is a sufficient alternative. For the
larger child, a belt or larger tree branch is effective.” Additional advice from
their Web site: Switching with a length of quarter-inch plumbing supply line is
a “real attention-getter.”
A woman in Tenn, named Lynn Paddock, in May of 2006 was convicted of the
murder of her four year old child, after beating him senseless with plumbing
line, abusing the other children in a similar manner and also found to have been
suffocating her infant child (this child lived and is now in CPS custody,) and Ms
Paddock is now in prison on a Murder One Charge. She blamed the Pearls for
her act. Micheal Pearl said she must have "misunderstood" what they were
saying.
Quote from the article:
"Pearl, 60, said he can't be blamed for mothers who take his tactics "too far"
and hurt their children.
Pearl's business, No Greater Joy Ministries, can't find a record that it shipped
her their books. (My note: His books can be found in MANY places, and many
parents have them supplied by friends, their churches, places like Amazon.com
and even some book stores. Simply the statement that Pearl was not able
to "find" a record that this particular woman bought a book directly from him
(and his income from his books topped one MILLION dollars last year) does not
keep him and his wife, Debi, from at least partial responsibility.)
Again quoting: "Pearl's books warn parents to never whip in anger, always in
joy." (my opinion, there is something terrifyingly SICK about anyone who takes
JOY from harming a child, which explains, perhaps, Debi Pearl's lackadaisical
attitude towards fathers who sexually abuse their children....)
(quote from Pearls' children) "Paddock must not have followed instructions."
Pearl's son and daughter insist.
By Pearl's math, one-sixth of the nation's estimated 3 million home-schooling
families use his training methods. (My opinion again, I DOUBT this.)
"The chances of one of them committing a crime is pretty good," Pearl said,
shrugging at the question in his churchyard after Sunday services and refusing
to say much more. " End of quote.

Again, similarly to an different recent case of child abuse, simply because a
woman breastfeeds, or practices Family Bed does NOT mean that all her other
aspects of parenting are pristine, are based on Sound Child Development facts
or even at all healthy for her children. Obviously, the Pearls are not people
most parents would have any reason to emulate.
I cannot abide child abuse. And, I cannot see anything other than that in
these people's (the Pearls) and their "followers" words.
Sorry to become so emotional. There is never an excuse or a rationaliztion for
Child Abuse. EVER.
