I got a heads-up that someone will be asking about breastfeeding an
older toddler during pregnancy, first trimester, when the mother is
having subchorionic bleeding. My understanding, from a little Web
research, is that this is a fairly common condition, the releasing of
pockets of blood accumulated in the outer folds of the placenta. It is
diagnosed with ultrasound, and monitored pretty closely, since it does
seem to slightly increase risks of premature labor and other problems.
It seems that mothers are generally told to avoid sex and heavy
lifting, and may be put on bed rest, or partial bed rest, though some
OBs are more relaxed than others about it..
My initial reaction is that this would no longer be the uncomplicated
pregnancy that people generally nurse right through. Is this an
over-reaction? Any bleeding during the pregnancy seems scary. But if
someone has some information on this specific problem and how
breastfeeding might impact it, please share.
