We've been asked to provide an advocacy statement for a mother who is on
a controlled methadone programme, with very occasional heroin use.
Social Services care plan calls for complete weaning, even 'tho baby is
only 4 months old and exclusively breastfed, which, as I understand it,
goes against all the scientific data.
If there is anyone on Lact-Net, who has direct experience of supporting
mothers in breastfeeding whilst on a methadone programme, I'd be very
grateful to hear from you. We'd be looking for one letter from you,
detailing your experience and why weaning is not required etc, to
include in the advocacy statements. To date, no 'expert' like this has
ever been contacted by the department the advocacy statement has been
sent to.
Or, if you know of any support groups of programmes that are
specifically working with breastfeeding babies in this way - I'd like to
hear about them.
Doesn't matter where in the world you are! :-)
Many thanks
Morgan Gallagher
