I could really use your help with this one. A new mother is to have her
breast milk tested for protein content per her nephrologist at 3-4 months.
Below is what she sent me about her situation. We would love to hear
opinions, thoughts, and experiences with similar situations. Thank you in
advance for your help.
Ann Marie Burkhart, IBCLC
Bloomington, IN

So, my disease is called membranous glomerulonephritis (a nice mouthful).
Effectively, I spill protein in my urine. The initial plan (that my
nephrologist brought up) was to test my breast milk for protein content.
The question is: how necessary is that? Baby is gaining weight well…but if
my milk is low in protein is he losing out on anything like brain
development or, I don't know, healthy building of organs?? I guess I should
have paid attention in biology to remember the importance of protein, exactly…
After posting on another listserv, we had gotten responses saying all that
matters was that the baby was growing and that my blood albumin (protein)
wasn't too low (it's already low due to the disease - no idea what
breastfeeding does yet…).
Like I said, my hope is that protein spills into my milk first, then my
blood content is lower when it is filtered by the kidneys and, hence, is
less stressful to my kidneys (this seems possible since I'm told not to eat
a high-protein diet because more protein can actually cause my kidneys to
spill way more, and make my blood albumin even lower.
So, that's what I know…no one seems to have any answers or any agreement on
what to look for…but I'd love to hear from anyone on the listserv you're
part of!
