The things that helped me the most:
1. Pumping. Early on I was pumping, then SNSing milk to baby, repeat,
repeat, repeat. That got to be too much for me emotionally and
exhaustion-wise, so I would offer SNS feed in the daytime only and just pump
and bottle feed at night. Eventually, the SNS/LactAid became too time
consuming - did I mention our next oldest child is a foster child who is 7
months older than the bio baby and we homeschool?? :) Started out pumping
nine times/day, weaned down to five. Hoping to go to four soon.
Getting larger flanges was a significant help. I use a Medela
Lactina Select pump now, but early on used a Pump n' Style.
2. Domperidone...I started out taking a pretty large dose then gradually
weaned down. Within a week, I saw supply improvement. It took about 4
weeks to get a full supply. I received 300 ounces of donor milk from a
woman in Ohio, and three local women pumped extra for me, so our formula use
was minimal, thankfully.
3. Tracking: I made a flowsheet to document feeds/pumps:
TIME: HOW: DIAPERS: PUMP
AMT: FEED AMT: "DOM"
AM/PM BF/BTL W/S
OZ. OZ. # tablets
4. SUPPORT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/EPers/ This group is purely for
mothers who have to exclusively express milk for their babies. This group is
not for mothers who choose to pump exclusively; nor is it for mums who pump
part-time and nurse part-time. It is only for mothers of babies who are
completely unable to nurse.
5. I started out taking fenugreek and blessed thistle, but once the
Domperidone started, I stopped those.
