Reva Rubin's developmental theories about how women make the transition to
motherhood include this thought. Remember the "taking in" period coming
before the "taking on" period? Reva's writing is seminal...but she's right
on on this one. It's why we see moms and babies locked in an embrace of the
eyes before the mom can finally say, "Oh, I have to take this baby home -
how am I going to take care of her??!"
I don't have time to google this now but give it a try, there's a couple of
good syntheses of her work on the web.'
