Hi Marianne,
I remember my mother had a few strings of pearls (I am not sure if they were
real, by the way, unfortunately I cannot ask her anymore). I remember her
wearing them on prictures, I don't think she wore them during the week, but
pearls were part of a wardrobe back in the 50's in The Netherlands. One of the
big differences with the US may be that Europe was still recovering from the
war and many of the luxuries that were part of everyday live in the US were
far from reality for the majority of people in Europe.
As of modern US: it is amazing how many women do have pearls. I am singing
in a choir and when we have a concert, quite often we are allowed only pearls
as jewelery, so I do have some pearls now :) . I see this also in other choirs.
