Subject: thickeners--guar gum, carrageenan
Shaughn Leach asks:
"do you know anything about guar gum by any chance - it is possible
this is used here rather than corn based thickeners?"
I would not be happy that guar gum was being used either, Now, I do not
trust the FDA AT ALL,
but from their website:
ttp://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/CONSUMER/CON00259.html
"Guar gum: Now banned from use as an active ingredient in drugs,
this complex carbohydrate that swells when wet has been used in weight-
loss products to produce a feeling of fullness. One brand resulted in
hospitalization of at least 10 patients and one death from a blood clot
after surgery to remove a throat blockage. Guar gum can cause diarrhea,
vomiting, bloating, and intestinal blockages."
Another note--carrageenan has been associated with stomach ulcers and
cancer. Just as with
herbs, when we take a whole plant and process it to remove component parts,
we create immense
risk. Seaweed is awesome food--carrageenan--not so.
