Dear Friends:
I read with interest Nikki's thread. "Unfortunately" health professionals =
also do have an obligation to disseminate factual information on the risks =
of co-sleeping and the incidence of SIDS. Supporting breast feeding is very=
important but..... Such information should be informed and include the re=
duced risks of "safe co-sleeping" but should also include the increased ris=
ks if smoking, obesity or illicit drugs or sedation are used etc
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------
It is fortunate that health professionals can now give accurate, evidence
based-information to new parents about safe bed-sharing. It is a joy to be able
to be specific: no drugs/alcohol/tobacco, baby wearing what parents are
wearing in terms of layers, firm mattress, no pets or other children, baby on
mattress, only the parents in bed, no sofa/couch/recliner/waterbed.
All the safe sleeping campaigns can include 3 options: safe bed-sharing, a
side-car sleeping arrangement, or safe crib us.
Please note that safe crib use is just as lengthy and detailed as safe
bed-sharing. Plus one must always be alert for recalls. The only way a recall
comes about is when babies are injured or killed. This is a risk of crib use.
And no matter what we do, at the present moment there is no way to prevent
SIDS.
warmly,
