IMHO doing chemistry experiments with young children also depends on
the confidence of the facilitators. As a chemist, I'm confident
doing experiments with dry ice and with dilute acids and bases with
6-8 year-olds. I'd include the calcium chloride experiment also.
You may want to use heavier bags (freezer weight), certainly have
kids wear eye protection, and be in an area with a sink and a
non-carpeted floor. Read MSDSs, and think through what happens in
case of spills.

I also think chemistry experiments are more fun for kids when they
can acquire the ingredients easily at grocery, drug, or pool supply
stores. Have some fun! Jane

Science Outside the Box is a tiny business that celebrates the
scientist in every one of us. I am a writer and teacher, and I have
fun with science every single day. I'm especially fond of designing
classes and science magic shows for kids and parents.
