Very well said, Susan. Very well said.
I wholeheartedly agree that IBCLC's should have a full range of experience
with the breastfeeding dyad from prenatal education right through until
weaning.
That said, I know that there are gaps in my own knowledge and experience
*because* I do not have a medical background. But, I think that those things
coud be covered with more stringent educational requirements before sitting
the exam. That coupled with ensuring that a certain number of BF
consultancy hours are gained by working with mothers of babies in every
stage of breastfeeding would mean that all IBCLC were on more equal footing
and had the same knowledge and experience base.
