One reason a baby may be photographed with no one holding her, is that the
person caring for the baby is also isolated from other adults and there is
no one to hold the camera if that adult is holding the baby. Just a thought,
but a thought based on personal experience. My childrens' albums are not at
all representative for how much time they spent in my arms, nor for how many
sunny days there were, for that matter :-)
I contacted the webmaster of a site we have here in Norway for mothers whose
breastfeeding is taking place through a bottle, or who are feeding ABM by
bottle. It was started by two mothers who felt very marginalized because
breastfeeding didn't work out as planned and the health services had no
information to offer on how to bottle feed, and is a non-commercial site,
with links to the BF mothers org site, and the BF org has a link to them
too. We are allies, imagine that! I got in touch because the few feeding
photos of the beautiful baby on the site, were without anyone holding the
child, who was drinking from a bottle. Having corresponded with her before
I knew how she felt about finally going to bottle feeding, luckily.
The reason was that the failure of breastfeeding was so painful, she could
hardly bear to take pictures with a bottle in them, and most of the time she
was simply unable to take pictures because she was holding the baby and the
bottle. She had almost no photos of the baby feeding at all, which means a
large part of his babyhood is unrecorded in photos - how sad is that? When
she set up the website the child was weaned from bottles so she couldn't
take any new ones. Since her sentiments are common ones here, she didn't
feel she could ask anyone else for pictures. Some Norwegian mothers might
not want to have images of themselves bottle feeding, on the internet. We
live in a tiny country where everyone knows everyone else.
The site is non-commercial, started by mothers who saw a need to support one
another, and it is a very real need, so I would never have criticized her
for using photos that *idealize* bottle feeding had she included a picture
of a baby interacting with a parent while feeding. But photos on websites
of companies who sell formula or feeding equipment that do so, are in
violation of the Code too.
Thinking it takes a village to make a nice baby album,
