Mom has one sided eczema (at least it looks like the eczema picture in the
Breastfeeding Atlas) for 6wks. It is sometimes painful (pinching) and
sometimes just tender (tingle), very red, flaky, on bottom of underside of nipple and
around 3/4 of the areola. Though at times during the 6wks there would be a
few times it would look a little better -not as red, not has flaky. She is an
experienced breastfeeding mom and is currently nursing a 1 yr old. She first
thought maybe the baby sucked wrong or teething. So for the first and second
week she did nothing special except limit nursing on that side, get better
latch and just thought it would heal. That did not help so on the third week
she started lansinoh. It did not help so then she tried hydrocortisone 2.5%
for 5 days at first 3 times a day then tapering down and stopping it. That
still did not help. She then went to her dr. who thought maybe it was an
infection since the hydrocortisone didn't help she suggested an antibiotic but mom
was scared of thrush and wanted to try Newman's APNO first to see if that
would help and then if it did not help try the oral antibiotic the dr. suggested.
Mom has only been on APNO 2 days.
So my questions are:
Have you seen/heard of only one sided eczema? What was your experience with
it?
Is it possible to have one sided rash just be eczema and that mom would just
have to continue treating it like people who have it on other parts of her
body? Maybe she just didn't treat long enough with hydrocortisone?
What other medications have you seen work for eczema? (Mom as no history of
eczema and has never had thrush.)
Mom asked if she should try gentian violet just to rule out the thrush.
Think that would be helpful?
I know mom has just started on APNO and still has the antibiotic to try but
I have read about Paget's so this has crossed my mind----- so hope that is
not the case--- mom is 35yr, no family history of breast cancer, has breastfed
all her children and had first child at 22yr , and dr. did not feel any lump
(since 50% of paget's patient will have also have a lump). So the question
is when does this mom/dr. consider paget's?
Thank you so much for your thoughts. You can reply to list but could you
also private email me so I do not miss your post.
