Hi Everyone,
I just have to chime in here.... I don't see babies' natural curiosity and desire to put things in their mouth as a reason to start solids early. Not denying that there really are those babies who want to eat early, I would excpect any 4 - 6 month old baby to take an interest in what those around her are doing, be it eating or talking on the phone, and want to grab whatever they have in their hands and put it in her mouth, be it food or the phone. Babies discover the world through their mouths, but just like we wouldn't let them grab and mouth the scissors we are holding, if we know that gut closure doesn't take place until around 6 months, we don't need to let them have our food either.
Just my 2 cents...
All the best,
Chayn in Israel, IBCLC
