Daughter #1: 1975, 10 mos (I was unfortunately stubborn and foolish then,
thinking as a pedi RN I didn't need LLL, when neighbor asked me to join her at
meetings); part time return to work (and certainly could have continued
nursing for much longer)
Daughter #2: 1983, 7 yr ( 2 of those yr tandem with younger sister; LLL
membership in 1984 leading to LLL leader in 1988; I overcame my foolishness)
Daughter #3: 1989, 6 yr (mother led weaning, very little milk it seemed and
was uncomfortable); full time mothering for last two children. Never was I
told that there wasn't any milk; had milk for yrs post weaning last  child;
felt MER around babies until fully entrenched in menopause.

I find the not knowing how to nurse in older children interesting as my
grandson, who had great difficulty breastfeeding due to neuro-motor deficits, and
nursed partially for only several months (got breastmilk for almost 2 yr,
though), several months ago finally "got it", and nursed a few minutes on an
empty breast. My daughter had offered her breast when he was upset and that
miracle of comfort, the maternal breast, brought him around immediately. My
daughter was ecstatic and every now and then he sucked at breast for a few
minutes, especially when in need of comfort. I always had thought with my own
that it was the breastmilk itself that produced that instantaneous emotional
recovery in a tantruming child but now I think it's more that intimate
connection that is so effective.
