Just want to second the responses of all who say Rachael Austin was right on
target to follow this mother and baby closely, and also that it does appear
that lactogenesis 2 is happening, because otherwise the baby would not be
gaining, and gaining steadily. I was tickled to see the same line of reasoning
in posts from people in quite different places too.
Rachael, can you measure the baby's length at one of the next contacts with
the family? You can tell the mother it's at my suggestion, because IME it
often shows very convincingly that baby is growing, but in length rather than
breadth. If that is too touchy you can stealthily measure the baby while she
is out of the room for a moment and just subtly post it to all 3500 of us here
on LN ;)
To Laurie W - you ask whether a slow steady gain on mother's own milk or a
more rapid gain with supplemental feeds is to be preferred. I'd say, look at
the baby. If the baby is happy, settled, peeing and pooping and gaining and
the mother is like this baby's mother, willing to be there for the baby full time,
then fine. If the baby is unhappy or if the mother seems to find the baby's
needs unreasonable to the point that she is unwilling to meet them, then I'd
support supplementing, esp if donor milk is available.
I would want to know that this baby will have fairly frequent contact with
someone knowledgeable and supportive until birthweight has been regained,
but I agree with Pamela that they could stand to skip a day and weigh a few
times a week at most, until that happens.

Kristiansand, Norway, where I found a 'breastfeeding tea' whose main
ingredient was PEPPERMINT LEAVES in a local health food store this week.
Dry-up tea, more like!
