"Does anyone have a reference for the normal (unstretched and distended) capacity of the adult stomach?"
I heard on the radio a couple years ago (no reference, but hey, it was NPR so it must have been true) that there was a study in which adults were given a meal of either rice *and* hot water (perceived as solid and beverage) or rice *in* hot water (perceived as soup). The amount that caused satiety depended on whether the same foods were offered mixed or separate. In other words, it was neither volume nor calories, completely, but also format.
I didn't hear Nils Bergman at ILCA, but I'm guessing he talked along similar lines - that this isn't just a "how big is this bag" issue and that maybe we're trying to put numbers on something that's actually quite complex.
