Lee discusses visual aids for?stomach capacity. What little data there?are on feed volumes by age shows that on day 7 the average feed volume is 65ml (2.19 ounces). By 4 weeks the average feed volume is 94ml (3.17 ounces).
Ingram JC et al. Maternal predictors of early breast milk output. Acta Paediatr 1999; 88:493-499
The egg in the belly ball set states the size of an extra large chicken egg at 60-81 ml. So a 10 day old baby could certainly have a stomach capacity within that range. We would need to actually measure and calculate volumes for grapes, tomatoes, and other fruits as well as any other visual aids we use. Any of these are a very imprecise proxy for making our point to avoid stuffing young babies with large quantities of formula. Just because a baby's stomach will accommodate being stuffed to the gills, doesn't mean that the baby should be fed?in that manner.
