Thank you Pam, for a wonderful explanation.
My credo for almost any ''daily'' breastfeeding problem has been and increasingly continues to be: feed less volume more often and stop swapping breasts every couple of minutes.
But, the remark I often get is that that will result in mothers not willing to breastfeed, because it is too much of a hassle to wear baby all the time and feed all the time. I started including in my credo, that changing the contents of feedings (formula vs mom's milk) does not change baby's normal behavior and needs. It is a baby's blueprint to be with mom and feed frequent little meals, independent of what is in the feeds.
My goal is to teach ''western society people'' that feeding infrequent massive feeds is cultural, not natural, even if many baby *seem* to appreciate or at least accept it. For one thing it might even decrease the binge eating that is seen so often and the bigger and bigger portions that are seen as normal, but do cause or at least contribute to the pandemic obesity.
(I plea guilty of being obese myself, as an obedient little girl I always finished whatever was on my plate; my parents lived through Hungerwinter in WWII and having lots to eat was a Gift we should not reject.)

Warmly,

Gonneke, IBCLC, LLLL insouthern Netherlands, always been an overweight and/or obese adult, but was very easy to get pregnant and was blessed with an abundant, sometimes overabundant milksupply for my 5 children.

Since you asked, I'll chip in, but not sure that I can help to shed
much light on the tantalizing questions you raise.
