Mavis, I started my work to become an IBCLC in approx the early 1990s , I
know some of the specifics of patient contact hours etc may have changed. I
also did not work as a Private Practice Doula. I worked for an agency, and my
hours were on file to view, if necessary. There was no problem using the hours
per shift I worked with my clients on only breastfeeding (as opposed to caring
for the mother, general baby care etc.)
When I took the exam, there were a lot fewer IBCLCs in general (I might
venture a guess that a good percentage more than the current 10% were non-
RN, non-hospital worker candidates, but I could be wrong. There were, I know,
very few people to "supervise" in those days. Few, if any of the hospital in my
area has IBCLS, and virtually all the small number of LCs and candidates I
knew were non-RN, LLLL trained candidates or IBCLCs.) I believe some of the
specifics of each Path were slightly different years ago.
