Hi Beth,
What I found is that this might be isolated or part of a syndrome / genetic
aberration. One thing that was mentioned a couple times, that could also be
associated, was maxillary hypoplasia. Does this look to be an issue with
this baby?
There were quite a few birth defects associated with some of these
syndromes, but these would be obvious, so it seems this child may have an
isolated case. Of course, you and the parents, and the hcp's should be very
vigilant about reporting and following anything out of the ordinary, but if
nothing else is noted, I would proceed as with any other baby that is not
"getting it" with bf, that is to say, skin to skin, encouraging baby led
latching, protecting the milk supply (I realize mother has a robust twin,
but she'll need milk for 2), and feeding the expressed milk by alternate
method. And following up, of course, to make sure it's going in the right
direction.
